Another weekend and another game for Off the Post as we travelled out to Buckinghamshire to watch Chalfont v Hanwell in this step 4 game.
In windy conditions, Hanwell got the game underway kicking towards the uncovered end. In the opening minutes of the game, it was Hanwell having many of the early chances down both wings. The windy conditions suited Hanwell in the first half with the wind aiding their balls forward. After the first 15 minutes, it was Chalfont who had a chance to go ahead with Luke Elliot starting his run inside his own half, before advancing some 40 yards before passing the ball off to Sydney Ibie who released a cross into the box. It would not be long again before Chalfont would go close in the Hanwell box. The first noteworthy incident of the game was moments later as from a Hanwell cross, Luke Elliot cleared the ball but on his way down clipped Marcus Mealing’s leg but went un-noticed by the referee or his assistant. The first half belonged to Chalfont who edged the majority of the chances, but the game was frequently stopped for needless fouls. With a few minutes to go until half time, Hanwell would have the ball in the Chalfont net from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for a push on the Chalfont goal keeper. Only 2 minutes later Ogi Obi was played through for a 1-1 with the keeper, but his shot was saved by the keeper.
As the conditions worsened in the second half, it was Chalfont attacking the uncovered end, who would dominate the early chances with the wind favouring them this half. With a change of tatics at half time, it was Chalfont who were more effective in the final third as the game progressed. 8 minutes into the game, following a free flowing attacking play, Chalfont had a shout for a penalty turned down. The game just as the 1st was stopped due to constant fouls from both sides stopping any movement in the final third. The game had fresh impetus on 74th when subs were made and within 2 minutes we had 2 more. Kahil Francis was the best of the subs and looked mostly likely to unlock something to end the stalemate in this game, running at the Hanwell defence down the left wing. As the clock was running down, it looked like we would have to settle for a draw but in the 89 minute Chalfont were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Owen James stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted the ball to the left of the keeper and to give Chalfont the lead. With little injury time left, Hanwell went on all out attack to take something for this game but were unable to penetrate the Chalfont defence.
Man of the match: Luke Elliot
Speaking to Chalfont St Peter manager Finlay Johnson “I’m really pleased my boys showed today what I always felt they had in them, Hanwell are a great side and today we more than matched them. The key now is to build some consistency, which is always a challenge with such a young group.
