The first interview of the 2020-2021 season as Off the Post travelled to the lovely Buckinghamshire countryside to interview Dwaine Bryan manager of Amersham Town. Amersham play in Spartan South Midlands Division 1, having been promoted in the 2017-2018 season despite finishing 6th the previous season.
How long have you been in charge?
I took over at the end of October. When i took over we were bottom of the league, so to turn the team around and make no changes at all, I think 11th was fair but I think we could have finished a little higher if the season had not been stopped due to COVID-19.
Do you think the FA were right to void all leagues below Step 2?
I think it should have been settled on PPG, negates any effort from players and volunteers, players scored goals etc. They finished the season by voiding it, but kept the fines from the season.
How will non league have changed due to COVID-19?
I think money will be the biggest change and the biggest leveller, will the big spending teams spend like that again? Are the players who were on big money going to be around again this season?
What positions are you looking to bolster this summer?
We have approached that we need to strengthen all over. We were looking for 2-3 from pre season trials and found 6. We started training in April on running and have been building it up with 1-1 and in small groups since.
What type of football do you like your side to play?
All of my coaching team, we like to play attacking football. We are big on stats and look at our players each week to look at what we can improve on. But you won’t see many 0-0s from our team!
Will your top scorer Reon Thomas be returning this season?
He is indeed staying on for another season, he brings experience and leadership to the side as he is one of the older lad’s on the team
What opposition are you looking forward/ looking to avoid this season?
We are not looking to avoid anyone. We are looking forward to playing my local team Hillingdon Borough, we lost both games by tight margins last year.
Who do you think will be strong in the league?
There will be 4 or 5 teams who have bigger budgets and out of those for the division. We want to be the best of the rest for the season ahead.
Let’s find out a little bit more about Dwaine…
What club do you support
Best moment in management
Our win over Bedford last season, my first in charge and the way we played when we took them on as well.
How has your coaching adapted over time?
We are all quite studious here, still quite close to the game, looking at what we can do etc.
What manager/coach do you admire the most?
Mauricio Pochettino, but recently i’ve been looking at Marcelo Bielsa. The level of detail in his play and seeing what we can implement here. But he has them 5 days a week. How we can press, attack and work without the ball.
What is the club’s plan for the next few years?
We are the the biggest small club around, we have been on a massive drive since we took over to look at community links with local schools, business’s and raise the stature of the club in the local community. Just trying to improve results and bring more people in to watch us.
Who do you think will win the league this year?
St Pantillimon/Stotfold had a very good finish to the end of the season. New Sallamis and Rayners Lane will be in the mix as well.
